Henry Twells

Henry Twells (1823-1900) was an English Anglican clergyman and prolific hymn writer who served as vicar of Alverstoke in Hampshire throughout much of his career. He was known for composing hymns that emphasized practical Christian living and spiritual devotion, contributing significantly to Victorian-era hymnody. Twells wrote numerous hymns that were included in major hymnal collections of the nineteenth century, reflecting the Anglican tradition of his time. His work exemplified the Victorian emphasis on clear theological instruction combined with accessible, singable melodies. Though not among the most famous Victorian hymn writers, Twells's contributions to church music helped shape the congregational worship practices of the Church of England during the nineteenth century.
