Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) was an English Anglican clergyman and one of the most influential hymnodists of the nineteenth century. As vicar of Monkland in Herefordshire, he became renowned for his editorial work on Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861), which became one of the most widely used hymnal collections in the English-speaking world. Baker wrote, translated, and adapted numerous hymn texts, blending traditional church music with contemporary devotional verse, and his work helped shape the revival of interest in both ancient Latin hymns and modern English compositions. His contributions established the high churchmanship tradition in hymnody and profoundly influenced Anglican worship practices. Baker's legacy endures through the continued use of Hymns Ancient and Modern and the many individual hymns he authored that remain staples of Christian worship.
