Horatio Spafford (1823-1888) was a Chicago lawyer, businessman, and Christian educator who became one of America's most beloved hymn writers following devastating personal losses. After losing his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and his four daughters in a maritime disaster in 1873, Spafford channeled his grief into profound expressions of Christian faith. He is best known for composing "It Is Well with My Soul" (1873), a hymn of remarkable spiritual resilience that has become a cornerstone of evangelical Protestant worship.
