James Montgomery (1771-1854) was an English Romantic poet, hymn writer, and social activist who became one of the most prolific hymnists of the 19th century. Born to Moravian missionary parents, he was raised in the Moravian tradition, which deeply influenced his approach to devotional poetry and hymn composition. Montgomery authored over 400 hymns, many of which remain in common use today, including "Angels from the Realms of Glory" and "Lord, Teach Us How to Pray." Beyond his hymnodic contributions, he was an influential journalist and passionate abolitionist whose faith-driven activism shaped both his literary work and public advocacy. His legacy established him as a bridge between Romantic poetry and evangelical hymnody, significantly expanding the poetic sophistication and theological depth of 19th-century church music.
