Jane Borthwick

Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813–1897) was a Scottish hymnodist and translator who made significant contributions to Victorian Christian hymnody. Along with her sister Jane Borthwick, she produced the influential collection 'Hymns from the Land of Luther' (1858), which introduced German Protestant hymns to English-speaking congregations through skillful translations. Her translations of hymns by Gerhardt, Nicolai, and other German Lutheran composers enriched the repertory of English Presbyterian and other Protestant churches. Borthwick's work exemplified the 19th-century ecumenical impulse to draw from continental European theological and musical traditions, making her a bridge figure in the broader movement to expand English hymnody beyond purely British sources.
