Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813-1897) was a Scottish hymn translator and writer who made significant contributions to 19th-century Christian hymnody. Working primarily within the Free Church of Scotland tradition, she collaborated with her sister Jane to translate and adapt German and other Continental hymns for English-speaking congregations. Borthwick is best known for her translations of German hymns, particularly those of Gerhard Tersteegen and other pietistic writers, making their theological depth accessible to Scottish and English audiences. Her work appeared in several important hymnal collections of the era, and she helped establish the practice of translating quality foreign hymns into English, influencing later hymnal development. Her contributions were instrumental in broadening the repertoire of evangelical Protestant hymnody during the Victorian period.
