Jean Tisserand

John Mason Neale (1818-1866) was an English Anglican clergyman and prolific hymnodist who made extraordinary contributions to Christian hymnody through translation and composition. He is best known for translating ancient Latin and Greek hymns into English verse, including 'O filii et filiae' (attributed to Jean Tisserand, c. 1494), which he rendered as 'O sons and daughters, let us sing.' Neale's translations and original compositions revitalized the use of patristic and medieval hymn texts in Victorian worship. His work at Sackville College and his advocacy for liturgical renewal significantly influenced Anglican hymnody and established many texts that remain central to Christian worship today.
