Johan Olof Wallin

Johan Olof Wallin (1779-1839) was a Swedish Lutheran clergyman and the foremost hymnodist of the Church of Sweden during the nineteenth century. He authored over 500 hymn texts that became foundational to Swedish Protestant worship, establishing him as one of Scandinavia's most influential hymn writers. His works reflected the piety of Swedish Lutheranism while demonstrating literary sophistication and theological depth. Wallin served as Archbishop of Uppsala and used his ecclesiastical position to promote the adoption of his hymns throughout the Swedish church. His legacy fundamentally shaped the character of Swedish hymnody and remains central to Lutheran worship in Sweden to the present day.
