Johann Franck (1618-1677) was a German Reformed pastor and prolific hymn writer who lived through the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Despite experiencing significant personal loss and hardship during the conflict, he composed over 120 hymns characterized by deep spiritual reflection and consolation. His hymns, written in the German vernacular, became central to Reformed Protestant worship and emphasized themes of faith, perseverance, and divine grace amid suffering. Notable among his works is the hymn 'Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness,' which remains widely sung in churches today. Franck's contributions helped establish a vital tradition of German Reformed hymnody and provided spiritual solace to communities traumatized by war.
