Johann Gramann (1487–1541) was a German Lutheran theologian and pastor who made significant contributions to early Protestant hymnody during the Reformation. Ordained as a Catholic priest before embracing Luther's theology, Gramann served as pastor in Heilbronn and became known for composing hymns that reflected Lutheran doctrine and piety. He authored several important hymn texts including 'Herzlich tut mich verlangen,' which later became associated with J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Gramann's works represent a bridge between medieval religious song and the new vernacular hymn tradition that became central to Lutheran worship, helping to establish the congregational hymn as a cornerstone of Protestant church life.
