John Brownlie (1859-1925) was a Scottish United Free Church minister and prolific hymnwriter who composed over 600 original hymns and translations. Known for his scholarly approach to hymnody, Brownlie drew extensively from early Christian sources, particularly Greek and Latin hymn traditions, which he skillfully adapted for modern congregational worship.
