John Burton (1773-1822) was an English Nonconformist clergyman and prolific hymnodist who made significant contributions to dissenting Protestant worship music. He authored numerous hymns characterized by their emphasis on Scripture's spiritual authority and its central place in Christian devotional life. Burton's compositions reflected the theological priorities of Nonconformist churches, which valued biblical literacy and doctrinal precision in congregational song. His hymns were widely adopted in Independent and Baptist congregations throughout England during the early 19th century. Though less widely remembered today than some of his contemporaries, Burton's work represents an important tradition of evangelical hymnody that emerged from English Dissent in this period.
