John Ellerton (1826-1893) was an English Anglican clergyman and one of the most prolific hymn writers of the Victorian era. Serving as vicar in several parishes including Withington and Crewe, he combined pastoral ministry with scholarly expertise in liturgics and hymnology. Ellerton authored and translated numerous hymns, demonstrating particular skill in adapting Latin hymns for English congregations and composing original texts suited to the Anglican liturgical calendar. His works are characterized by theological depth, poetic refinement, and accessibility for congregational singing. He remains a significant figure in Anglican hymnody, with many of his compositions continuing to appear in modern hymnals.
