Joseph Henry Gilmore (1834-1918) was an American Baptist minister, biblical scholar, and prolific hymn writer who significantly contributed to 19th-century Protestant hymnody. Educated at Brown University and Newton Theological Institution, he served as pastor of churches in Massachusetts and New Hampshire before becoming a professor of biblical languages at the University of Rochester. Gilmore is best remembered for composing the beloved hymn 'He Leadeth Me,' written in 1862, which became one of the most widely sung Baptist hymns and exemplifies his gift for combining scriptural imagery with accessible, comforting melodies. His hymns, characterized by their doctrinal soundness and pastoral warmth, reflect the evangelical Baptist tradition and continue to be sung in churches today. Gilmore's dual career as both a scholar of Scripture and a composer of congregational music made him an influential figure in American religious music during the nineteenth century.
