Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was a Cistercian abbot and medieval theologian whose devotional writings profoundly influenced Christian spirituality and hymnody. He authored numerous Latin hymns characterized by intense mystical theology and Marian devotion, including the famous "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" ("O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden"). His poetic works became foundational to medieval Christian worship and were widely translated into vernacular languages. Ray Palmer (1808-1887), an American Congregational minister, translated Bernard's Latin hymns into English, making them accessible to 19th-century American Protestant congregations. Palmer's translations preserved Bernard's theological depth while adapting them to contemporary English hymnody, ensuring the medieval mystic's spiritual legacy endured in American churches.
