Lazarus Spengler
1479–1534 · Germany · Medieval
Lazarus Spengler (1479-1534) was a German Lutheran theologian and city clerk of Nuremberg who became an influential figure in the Protestant Reformation. A close associate of Martin Luther, Spengler authored several hymns and religious texts that supported the reform movement, including the notable hymn 'Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein.' His work exemplified the Lutheran tradition of congregational hymnody, helping to establish German-language sacred music as a cornerstone of Protestant worship. Spengler's contributions to both theological literature and church music made him a significant figure in shaping the musical and spiritual character of early Lutheranism.
