Luke the Evangelist
Luke the Evangelist was an early Christian author and physician traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. His Gospel contains significant canticles fundamental to Christian worship, including the Magnificat (Mary's song of praise), the Benedictus (Zechariah's canticle), and the Nunc Dimittis (Simeon's prayer), which have become central to liturgical prayer and hymnody throughout Christian tradition. Luke's careful preservation of Mary's prayer in his infancy narrative profoundly influenced early Church Marian theology and established textual foundations for centuries of Christian devotional practice. His witness to these canticles in the first-century Palestinian Christian community provided the Church with some of its most enduring poetic and spiritual expressions. The canticles Luke recorded remain integral to daily prayer in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and many Protestant traditions.
