Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf

Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) was a German nobleman and bishop of the Moravian Church who became one of the most prolific hymn writers of the 18th century, composing over 2,000 hymns. A pietist leader, he founded the Herrnhut community in 1722, which became a center for revival spirituality and missionary activity. Zinzendorf's hymns emphasized personal devotion to Christ and the emotional dimensions of faith, reflecting the Moravian tradition of intimate, contemplative worship. His theological emphasis on Christ-centered piety and his extensive hymn corpus profoundly influenced Protestant hymnody across Europe and shaped the devotional character of Methodist and Evangelical movements.
