Nicolai Leonhard Zinzendorf

Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) was a German religious reformer and pivotal figure in the Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum), establishing the community at Herrnhut in 1722. A prolific hymn writer who composed over 2,000 hymns and sacred poems, Zinzendorf infused Moravian hymnody with deeply personal, emotional spirituality emphasizing the wounds of Christ and intimate devotion. His hymn texts, written in German and other languages, became foundational to Moravian worship and influenced Protestant hymnody across Europe and America. Zinzendorf's theological emphasis on heart religion and his innovative approach to communal singing helped establish the Moravian tradition as one of the most musically and poetically rich expressions of Protestant Christianity.
