Nicolaus Zinzendorf

Nicolaus Ludwig, Count Zinzendorf (1700-1760) was a German religious leader and prolific hymnist who founded the Moravian Church renewal at Herrnhut in Saxony. He authored over 2,000 hymns characterized by intense emotionalism, personal devotion, and poetic imagery that profoundly influenced Protestant hymnody. His hymns emphasized intimate communion with Christ and were instrumental in shaping the spiritual identity of the Moravian tradition. Zinzendorf's contributions to Christian music extended beyond individual compositions to encompassing an entire theological approach to worship that prioritized heartfelt expression and community singing.
