Nikolai Leonard Zinzendorf

Nikolai Leonard Zinzendorf (1700-1760) was a German-born Moravian bishop and theologian who founded the Moravian Church renewal movement at Herrnhut in 1722. A prolific hymn writer, he composed approximately 2,000 hymns that became central to Moravian worship and spirituality, characterized by their intimate, experiential approach to faith. His hymns emphasized personal devotion, missionary zeal, and the centrality of Christ's passion, profoundly influencing Protestant hymnody across Europe and America. Zinzendorf's theological vision and musical legacy made the Moravian Church a significant force in 18th-century Protestant revival movements, and his hymns continue to be sung in Christian worship today.
