Nikolai Leonhard Zinzendorf

Nikolai Leonhard Zinzendorf (1700-1760) was a German religious leader and theologian who founded the Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum) and established the Herrnhut community in Saxony. A prolific hymnwriter, Zinzendorf authored over 2,000 hymns that blended Lutheran, Reformed, and Moravian traditions with deeply personal pietistic theology. His hymns, characterized by emotional intensity and theological depth, became central to Moravian worship and significantly influenced Protestant hymnody throughout Europe and North America. Zinzendorf's literary output and his vision of ecumenical Christian community made him one of the most influential figures in eighteenth-century hymnody and the development of modern church music.
