Philip Paul Bliss (1838-1876) was an American gospel musician, composer, and hymn writer who pioneered the gospel song movement in the nineteenth century. Working primarily in the evangelical Protestant tradition, he composed numerous hymns and gospel songs that became foundational to American revivalism, often collaborating with evangelist Dwight L. Moody. His most famous works include "It Is Well with My Soul" (lyrics by Horatio Spafford) and "Jesus Loves Me," which remain staples of Christian worship. Bliss revolutionized hymnody by blending popular musical idioms with spiritual content, making gospel music more accessible and emotionally resonant for congregations. His career was cut short when he died tragically in a railway accident in 1876, but his prolific legacy of over 1,000 compositions profoundly shaped the development of American gospel and contemporary Christian music.
