Phillip Nicolai

Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608) was a German Lutheran pastor and prolific hymn writer who made significant contributions to Protestant hymnody during the Reformation era. Serving as pastor in Moers and later in Hamburg, he composed both texts and melodies for numerous chorales that became foundational to German Lutheran worship. His most celebrated works include 'O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden' (O Head, All Wounded and Bare) and 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' (Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying), which are regarded as masterpieces of Lutheran hymnody. Nicolai's hymns, characterized by their theological depth and memorable melodies, were widely adopted in Protestant churches and later inspired major composers including J.S. Bach. He remains one of the most important hymn writers of the Lutheran tradition and a central figure in the development of German Protestant church music.
