Reginald Heber

Reginald Heber (1783-1826) was an English Anglican clergyman, poet, and the Bishop of Calcutta who made significant contributions to Christian hymnody in the 19th century. He composed approximately 57 hymns of enduring theological and literary merit, many of which are still widely sung in churches today. His hymns, including "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "From Greenland's Icy Mountains," are characterized by their doctrinal clarity, poetic sophistication, and accessibility to congregational singing. Though his episcopate in India lasted only three years before his untimely death, Heber's literary legacy profoundly influenced the development of English-language hymnody and established him as one of the most important hymn writers of the Romantic era.
