Samuel Longfellow

Samuel Longfellow (1819-1892) was an American Unitarian minister and poet, younger brother of the renowned poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He authored numerous hymns that emphasized moral transformation, spiritual awakening, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, reflecting the liberal theological perspective of 19th-century American Unitarianism. His hymn texts were characterized by accessible language and themes of ethical living and human dignity. Longfellow served as minister in Brooklyn and later in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his hymns appeared in several major hymnals of the period, contributing significantly to the Unitarian hymnodic tradition.
