Saumuel Barber

Samuel Barber (1910-1981) was an American composer known primarily for his lyrical, tonal approach to modern classical music rather than hymnody specifically. While not a hymn composer, Barber's sacred works and general compositional style influenced church music traditions, particularly through his contemplative melodic gifts. His famous 'Adagio for Strings' has become an unofficial funeral and memorial composition, often performed at state funerals and religious observances. Though his catalog was not predominantly devoted to hymn writing, his accessible harmonic language and emotional depth represent an important bridge between traditional sacred music sensibilities and twentieth-century concert music.
