Simeon
Simeon was a righteous and devout man in 1st-century Jerusalem who recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah when Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the Temple. His canticle, known as the Nunc Dimittis (Luke 2:29-32), became one of the most significant texts in Christian liturgy and has been sung in evening prayer services throughout the church's history. The canticle expresses Simeon's joy at witnessing the salvation of Israel and the light of revelation to the Gentiles before his death. This ancient hymn text remains central to Christian worship across Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant traditions.
