Simon Browne

Simon Browne (1680-1732) was an English Congregationalist minister and hymn writer who served in London and made significant contributions to Protestant devotional verse. He developed a substantial body of hymns and devotional poetry that reflected the Congregationalist tradition and emphasized personal piety and spiritual experience. Despite his productive literary career, Browne struggled with severe melancholy and mental distress in his later years, which influenced the introspective and sometimes dark tone of his later works.
