Sir John Bowring (1792-1872) was an English poet, hymn writer, linguist, and statesman who made significant contributions to Christian hymnody during the 19th century. A prolific composer of hymn texts, he authored numerous works that were widely adopted by Protestant churches, including the beloved hymn "In the Cross of Christ I Glory." Bowring possessed remarkable linguistic abilities, speaking over 100 languages, which enabled him to adapt and translate hymns from various traditions and cultures. Beyond his ecclesiastical work, he served in Parliament and held diplomatic positions, including consul-general to Egypt and Hong Kong, yet maintained his commitment to hymn writing throughout his life. His hymns are characterized by their clarity, theological depth, and singable melodies, making him one of the most influential hymn writers of the Victorian era.
