Thomas Andrew Dorsey (1899-1993) was an African American gospel musician and composer widely recognized as the 'Father of Gospel Music.' He revolutionized Christian music by synthesizing blues, jazz, and African American spiritual traditions into a new musical idiom that became foundational to modern gospel music. Dorsey composed over 1,000 gospel songs, including the iconic 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord,' which became anthems in Black churches and influenced generations of gospel artists. His innovative approach elevated gospel music from its roots in spirituals to a dynamic, emotionally expressive form that profoundly shaped American religious music in the 20th century.
