Thomas Hansen Kingo (1634–1703) was a Danish Lutheran bishop and one of Scandinavia's most celebrated hymnodists of the 17th century. He published two major hymnal collections that significantly shaped Danish Lutheran worship: Jabals Trumpetklang (1674) and Spiritual Trumpet Sound (1689), the latter containing over 200 original hymns. Kingo's compositions combined poetic sophistication with theological depth, drawing on both Lutheran tradition and the broader European Baroque hymnodic movement. His work established a new standard for Danish-language sacred poetry and earned him recognition as the founder of modern Scandinavian hymnody. Many of his hymns remain central to Danish and Scandinavian Lutheran worship to this day.
