Thomas Hastings (1784-1872) was a prolific American hymn writer and composer who created over 1,000 hymns and became one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Protestant hymnody. He served as a music educator and director of church music, promoting the professionalization of American sacred music and establishing new standards for hymn composition. Hastings championed congregational singing and worked to elevate the musical quality of worship services throughout the United States. His hymns, characterized by accessible melodies and theological depth, were widely adopted in Protestant churches and published in numerous hymnals.
