Thomas Haweis

Thomas Haweis (1734–1820) was an English Evangelical clergyman and prolific hymn writer who served as minister of the Independent Chapel in Tottenham Court Road, London. A leading figure in the evangelical revival movement, he composed numerous hymns characterized by their spiritual fervor and theological depth, many of which were published in his collection 'Carmina Christo' and other works. Haweis was instrumental in promoting missionary endeavors and combined his pastoral ministry with hymn writing that emphasized personal devotion and Christian experience. His hymns, including 'O Thou in all thy might so far' and 'Jesus, I my cross have taken,' became widely used in Protestant worship and contributed significantly to the development of English evangelical hymnody. His legacy reflects the broader Evangelical movement's emphasis on heartfelt faith expressed through accessible yet profound congregational song.
