Thomas Sternhold

Thomas Sternhold (c.1500-1549) was an English poet and courtier who served under Henry VIII and Edward VI. He is best known as one of the principal creators of the English metrical psalter tradition, pioneering the translation of biblical psalms into vernacular verse suitable for congregational singing. His work laid the foundation for the Protestant emphasis on psalm-singing in English worship, departing from the Latin liturgical tradition. Sternhold's psalms were collected and expanded upon after his death, particularly in collaboration with John Hopkins, resulting in the influential Sternhold and Hopkins psalter. His contribution fundamentally shaped English Protestant hymnody and established the metrical psalm as a central element of Reformed worship.
