William Chatterton Dix
1837–1898 · England · Romantic
William Chatterton Dix (1837–1898) was an English hymnwriter and merchant who made significant contributions to Victorian hymnody despite pursuing a career in business and banking. He wrote over 350 hymns, many of which became beloved in English-speaking churches, including the well-known Christmas hymn "As with Gladness Men of Old." A serious illness in his youth led him to dedicate himself to hymn composition as a spiritual calling. His hymns are characterized by their theological depth, poetic quality, and accessibility, reflecting the high standards of Victorian hymn writing. Dix's prolific output and enduring works secured his place as a major figure in 19th-century English hymnody.
