William Hiley Bathurst

William Hiley Bathurst (1796–1877) was an English clergyman and prolific hymn writer of the High Church Anglican tradition. Ordained in the Church of England, he devoted much of his ministry to composing hymns that emphasized faith, perseverance, Christian virtue, and sacramental theology. Bathurst produced over 200 hymns, many of which were published in collections and incorporated into Anglican hymnals of the nineteenth century. His works reflected the liturgical sensibilities of the Oxford Movement and contributed significantly to the revival of congregational hymn-singing in Victorian Anglican churches. Despite being less widely remembered than some contemporaries, Bathurst's hymns remain valued for their theological depth and poetic craftsmanship within the High Church tradition.
