1825–1878 · England · Classical
William Whiting (1825-1878) was an English Anglican clergyman and hymnodist who served as Master of the Choir at Winchester College. He composed numerous hymn texts that reflected his High Church Anglican theology and liturgical sensibilities. Whiting is best remembered for his hymn 'Eternal Father, Strong to Save,' a maritime hymn that became widely adopted by naval congregations and remains popular in English-speaking churches today. His contributions to Victorian hymnody were significant in establishing texts that combined theological depth with accessible melodies, contributing to the Anglican hymn tradition during the mid-nineteenth century.
