William Whittingham

William Whittingham (1524–1579) was an English Protestant clergyman and biblical scholar who made significant contributions to Reformed hymnody and biblical translation. As Dean of Durham Cathedral, he was instrumental in producing the Geneva Bible, one of the most influential English Bible translations of the Protestant Reformation. Whittingham also contributed numerous psalm paraphrases and metrical versions of biblical texts that were widely used in Reformed congregations. His work bridged scholarly biblical study with congregational worship, providing English-language psalms and hymnic texts that supported Protestant liturgical practice. His legacy established him as a key figure in the development of English-language Reformed hymnody during the sixteenth century.
