Jeremiah Eames Rankin (1828-1904) was a prominent American Congregationalist minister, educator, and hymn writer who significantly contributed to American Protestant hymnody during the nineteenth century. He served as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Washington, D.C., and was president of Howard University, where he furthered both theological education and musical development. Rankin composed numerous hymns that became popular in American churches, including the well-known hymn 'God Be With You Till We Meet Again,' which achieved widespread adoption in Protestant worship services. His hymn texts reflect the Congregationalist tradition's emphasis on congregational participation and theological clarity, combining accessible language with spiritual depth.
