Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a Swiss-born theologian and religious scholar who became one of the most influential figures in American Protestant Christianity during the 19th century. Though primarily known as a church historian and theologian, Schaff made significant contributions to hymnody through his editorial work and translations, helping to preserve and disseminate reformed Protestant hymn traditions in America. He served as professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York and was instrumental in documenting and promoting the study of Christian worship practices and liturgical music. Schaff's scholarly approach to hymn collection and his efforts to bridge European and American Protestant traditions made him an important figure in the development of American hymnody during the post-Civil War era.
