In John chapter 2, the message of the gospel develops the theme of the divine identity of Christ and belief for eternal life. Lutheran interpretation frequently emphasizes the proclamation of Christ, the distinction between law and gospel, and the promise of justification through faith.

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
