Josiah Conder

Josiah Conder (1789-1855) was an English Congregationalist minister, editor, and prolific hymn writer who made significant contributions to nineteenth-century Protestant hymnody. He served as editor of The Eclectic Review and was known for composing doctrinally sound hymn texts that reflected Congregationalist theology and evangelical piety. Conder authored numerous hymns that were widely adopted in Congregationalist and other nonconformist churches, establishing himself as a major figure in the development of English hymn literature. His work exemplified the high literary and theological standards of Victorian-era hymn composition, and many of his texts remain in modern hymnal collections. As both a creative hymnist and influential editor, Conder shaped the musical and spiritual life of English Protestantism during the nineteenth century.
