Matthias Loy

Matthias Loy (1828-1915) was a German-born Lutheran pastor and theologian who emigrated to the United States and became a leading figure in the Ohio Synod. He was a prolific hymn writer and translator who authored numerous original hymns and translated German Lutheran hymns into English, significantly enriching American Lutheran hymnody. Loy served as editor of the Lutheran Standard and contributed substantially to Lutheran liturgical music and theological literature during the 19th century. His work helped preserve and transmit German Lutheran musical and spiritual traditions to English-speaking American congregations. He remains an important figure in the development of Lutheran church music in the United States.
