Martin Behm

Martin Behm (1557-1622) was a German Lutheran pastor and hymnodist who served as a minister in Silesia during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He composed devotional hymns characterized by expressions of deep contrition, penitential themes, and fervent faith in Christ's mercy, reflecting the spiritual concerns of Lutheran Protestantism. Behm's hymnic works contributed to the rich tradition of German Lutheran chorale poetry that flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. His compositions were valued for their theological depth and emotional sincerity, making them popular in Lutheran congregational worship. Though less widely remembered today than some of his contemporaries, Behm remains an important figure in the development of German Protestant hymnody.
